REDSHIFT chat to The Smiths Mike Joyce 

Hi Mike Joyce, how are you? and what you been up to lately?

Very well indeed thank you. Bizarrely, I’ve just had my radio acting debut on BBC Radio 4 with Maxine Peake in a play called,”My Dad Keith” This was followed up with a presentation of poetry & readings with Maxine and Sheila Hancock! It was right out of my comfort zone which made it such a brilliant experience.

So you are launching your new club night at North London hangout Proud, how did that come about?

Well, I was asked by Stu Whiffen to dj at the 30th birthday party of legendary nightclub “The Pink Toothbrush” in Essex with Scroobius Pip. I had such a great night we spoke about doing something similar.

What can Proud Camden expect?

Even though all the dj’s tastes in music was really diverse at The Pink Toothbrush, the main aim of the night was to have a great party. That’s exactly what I want to bring to Proud. I want to mix it up a little. No particular style, theme or genre. Let’s just party!

Ok, well you have mastered the drum stuff, how do you rate yourself as a dj and what is your approach to you dj set?

Again, it’s the partying aspect I’m more interested in than my dj ing skills. I don’t prepare a set for a night and I’ve never played the same set twice. I play what I think is right for the night. I like to feel the audience…

Based on the bands you have been involved with people may think the night will be all about indie classics, is it?

That’s one of the common misconceptions people have. As you can see from the tracks I’ve listed below, I like to play records that sound great in a club atmosphere, but not any particular genre.

THE LIBERTINES sign NEW RECORD DEAL !!!

The Libertines have signed a new record deal with Virgin EMI.

The reunited band released their last studio LP – 2004's self-titled second album – through Rough Trade, but have now announced that they are signed to the major label.

The band inked the deal in Thailand, where Pete Doherty is currently in rehab.

Speaking in a statement about the deal, Doherty said, "I don’t know what to say, I’m so happy. It was a beautiful day." Co-frontman Carl Barât added: "After everything we have been through The Albion sails on course again, I couldn't be more excited."

about Launching his Clubnight

 We.Are.Lizards @ The Stillery Camden

 1. So alongside its residency at Book Club Shoreditch you are taking your We.Are.Lizards clubnight to North Londons newest hangout The Stillery what can Camden expect?

 Simply a great night out. Which sounds a bit too simple but thats really the sole aim. We don’t have a music policy as such, we just try to book great guest DJs (to add to our eclectic residents) and ask that they play whatever they want as long as people can get down to it. It can be popular or obscure, as long as it bangs and people aren’t standing around bored/confused. 

 2. Tell us a little about the kinda guests we can expect from who you have had play at previous parties? 

The list is varied and endless! I will reel off a few rather than explain too much. DJ Yoda, Zane Lowe, Rob da Bank, Enter Shikari, Madness, Don Letts, Eddy Temple Morris... I could go on and on. Its been a busy three years! 

 3. You have stayed loyal to your team of resident djs too, who are they? 

Our guests are always strong, but its our residents that have built us such a huge regular following. People like Yoda and Zane have got people through the door (and, indeed, smashed their sets) but what has had people coming back month after month for three years of sold out nights has been the quality from start to finish. DJ Destruction is PROBABLY the name I have had to shout in enquisitive ears the most. I have also revelled in watching guests like Yoda, John Kennedy and many more stand and watch his sets in awe. He is a former DMC champ, he has worked with a long list of your favourite rappers...and is the best kept secret in London. Add to that Push Music who brings insane variation and the greatest inside line to the best new tracks and mixes, Redshift Rebels who will have you dancing to RnB one minute and house the next and you have a packed night. And I have GENUINELY only just remembered that I DJ every month too...so I guess that adds to it all.

 4. Ok, well you have mastered the spoken word performance stuff, how do you rate yourself as a dj and what is your approach to you dj set? 

I'm really proud of how I've developed as a DJ. Infact, it’s only really in the last year or so I'm even comfortable referring to myself as such. I confess that, when it started, I was very much just a guy playing songs... but, having done this for a while now, I feel I can now hold my own amongst these beasts as a DJ. My approach is always fairly open. Again, experience now kind of allows me to just get the feel of the room and see where it takes me (then just play Ante Up anyway...). The more drunk I am, the more likely you will be hearing a lot of aggressive Hip Hop. That’s about all I can tell you.

 5. People may think the night will be all about hip hop and spoken word…is it? 

It really isn’t, no. Infact we started to limit the "live" element for exactly that reason. This is music as loud as your body can comfortably receive it. This is a night out. This is ringing ears and spilt beers. This is a party.
